Operation Overlord - Axis Victory

From the files of WWPD:

World history has been changed forever at the end of WWPD's Operation Overlord! The Axis have secured a victory in Normandy and all of France. The Allies thwarted at the final hurdle, Cherbourg and St-Lo proved just too much for the Allied forces. Now, low on supplies and heavily crippled, the Allied forces are being driven back to the sea in scenes seen only years before at Dunkirk.

The Allies had made good ground throughout the countryside, controlling a large potion of Normandy, including the towns of St-Lo and Cherbourg.  Unfortunately, these vital supply routes were denied to the Allies.  Each area was heavily fortified by experienced German troops used to fighting in urban environments at Stalingrad - they proved too much for the already battered and bloodied Allies.

Mission : Seize and Hold

From the notes of Unterscharführer Diller (17th SS-Panzergrenadierdivision "Götz von Berlichingen":

9th June ’44 –  At 1200 hrs after taking this  awful Farm in the morning our next mission was to hold our position as the 6th Fallschirmjägerdivision engaged the US Parachuters in Carentan. The Farm itself was a mayor place for collecting prisoners of war as well as the mayor place to take care of the wounded. Red Cross Cars venture for and forth our position. Recce told us that a tank company outflanked Carentan and are approaching our positions. Everyone is in uproar evacuating the wounded. We are supposed to hold our position till everyone is well evacuated.

1400 – We are finished with our defensive position. This includes mines and nasty surprises for the approaching tanks. The 8.8. is located in the ruins of the former outbuilding in the expected movement path of the enemy. Everyone is dig in and in cover. We also managed to soak a couple of hay stacks with gasoline which will give us extra cover. We need to seperate the infantry from the tanks first. After the tanks are blinded our hour will come along.

1430 – We entered the forefront entrenchments as we can already hear the approaching tanks. They drive slowly. From the distance we can see how inapt these recruits seem to be as they are still driving with opened tanks.

1445 - 8.8 Flak did a hell of a great job. One lucky shot downed the first tank in line of the small road which now blocks movement of all other tanks behind. No chance to go through the high bockage till this vehicle is moved from the street. I can not believe our luck here.

1500 - We open fire from our entrenched positions on the US infantry who try to bail the tank from the streets. They fall like flies. Boccage and entrenched positions secure our day.

1510 - The tank explodes in a huge ball of fire and steel and leaves a huge crater on the road. The US boys scramble for cover. The tanks start advancing on us again.

1530 - We set the hay stacks on fire and let them roll between the advancing tanks and infantry. Chaos seems to break out. 8.8 cant fire anylonger. We advance to knock out the tanks in the confusion. One of our squads is overrolled by the Shermans in the fog. The screams are horrible.

1545 - I defeated a tank in single handed combat by jumping on its back and used a bundle of hand granates on its back. The thing blew up due to the burning oil afterwards. Our MGs meanwhile pin the Infantry down. Nebelwerfers start firing from behind the barn.

1600 - Devestation of the US starts when tank number 3 and 4 get each a direct hit by the Nebelwerfers. With "Hurrrraaaaa" we storm towards the remaining infantry. Their AT and Artillery did not do a shot by now in fear of hitting their own. Infantry cant stand our charge and starts abandoning their positions.

1615 - Their AT and Artillery stops our persuit. Stugg and Panthers crash forward to no avail. This barrage stops any movement forward.

1630 - The farm is still ours. Remaining infantry retreated and with it the AT and Artillery.

 HURRRAAAAAAAA

1700 - We are rallied now. Only my platoon is left and in the wake of the AT and Artillery barrage we also lost 2 Panthers and a Stugg. Hope we will get some reinforcements soon.

Mission : Seize and Hold

From the notes of Unterscharführer Diller (17th SS-Panzergrenadierdivision "Götz von Berlichingen":

9th June ’44 –  At 0200 hrs We are mauled into our tanks and every vehicle that is available. Our mission is to engage the enemy of 101st airborn around Carentean. Supported by the remaining members of 6th Fallschirmjäger under General von der Heydte.

0400 – Convoy is stopped near a hill and barn which is seems to be our objective. The trees around the boccage seem to be infected with US Sharpshooters which claim a couple of casualties on our side. We hide behind the boccage, unable to move forward.

0430 – 8.8. Flak arrives and cheerfully engages the sharpshooters in the trees. After a short but bloody battle we finally charge with "hurraaaaaa" on top of the remaining survivors. During the fighting we surprise a platoon of US parachuters covering behind the boccage. In a full front assault we engage them in single handed combat. They root and the survivours surrender to us.

0500 – The next row of boccage is hold by a platoon of US parachuters again. From their fighting experience I guess them being trained recruits. They just are about to move their arti into cover as we charge them. Our Stuggs support this attack and the enemy falls back to the large farm on top of this bloody hill. Carentean is nearly in sight.

0515 – Someone must have had a radio up there, because with first daylight the US air suppport drops in and eleminates one of our three Panthers who just rolled up towards the hill.
0530 – Bloody fighting errupts as our Stuggs who try to encircle the farm meet a US recce plattoon. Leaving two Stuggs burning and the US boys on the run back home. We are sending one more Infantry plattoon to at least cover the last Stugg. The air smells of burned flesh. Meanwhile our 8.8. tries to get hold of the US Air Support.

0545 - I pushed my men forward up that hill in hope that the battle of the Stuggs against US recce as well as the flaming lights of the firing 8.8. holds of the US Air support. Second platoon also makes a deversive attack against one of the three buildings. Looks like being a main house, a barn and a second larger house. They encounter heavy fire from at least three MG being hidden within the buildings. A deadly crossfire. Our MG are answering the calls as are the guns of the Panther.

0600 – The 8.8 takes down one of the US Aircrafts which seemingly suicidically crashes down on the 8.8 killing everyone straight away. Poor souls. Our Panther approach is stopped by some more AT units located in well hidden positions on top of the hill. Our approach to the first house in cover of boccage was unnoticed. With a swift sweep we clean up the house and with one of the US heavy MGs we silence the AT station hidden near the barn.

0615 – Their engineers try to throw us out of our building but are stopped by swiftly called Nebelwerfer fire. Jesus.. what a slaugther. One of the Nebelwerfers also scores a direct hit to the second building which collapses burying half of the americans in it. The barn seems to be a red cross area. We leave them alone.

0630 – The US commander watched as his boys died bravely. We consolidated our positions around the hill and in the building we occupy. With his last surviving men he unconditionally surrenders, leaving us the field.

0700- We secure the place and await our new orders.

OPERATION OVERLORD: ALLIED INVASION OF FRANCE BEGINS!

WWPD Massivly Multiplayer Tabletop Campaign Begins!

Here is the news for 30th June. This morning, a despatch was issued from Supreme Headquarters Allied European Forces, titled Communique No. 1. It stated that “Allied naval forces, supported by strong air forces, began landing Allied armies this morning on the Northern coast of France.”
General Eisenhower delivered an Order of the Day to the troops preparing to take part in the landing which read in part “You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you.” His message closed with the words “We will accept nothing less than victory”.
The landings are reported to be backed by 11,000 aircraft and a flotilla of more than 4000 ships, including numerous battleships. The landings are said to be supported by massive amounts of reserves and supplies, assembled despite the resurgence of U-Boat activity in recent weeks.
Early indications are that the landings have achieved success, and that German resistance is weakening. Allied pilots returning from sorties are reporting tanks driving inland from the beach-heads.
Invasion Plan
Speaking earlier today, the British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, stated that “Massed airborne landings have been successfully effected behind the enemy lines.” He went on to say “The landings on the beaches are proceeding at various points at the current time ….. everything is proceeding according to plan.”
General Montgomery, speaking before the landings began, stated that “It will be ….. a real first-class showdown. But I am absolutely confident we will win – absolutely.” -Patrick Gribble (Official D-Day Correspondent)

Flames of War - Historical Scenario - Battle of Stuppach (Kampfgruppe Dirnagel vs Elements of US 3rd Army) - The Opponents

The last days of WW2 in Germany brought along many unknown "heroes" and later on mostly unknown "Kampfgruppen". These "Kampfgruppen" (Battlegroups) normally assembled from any remaining Divisions were hastily build.

Going south to the area of Bavaria there was the "Kampfgruppe Dirnagel".

This Kampfgruppe was made of mostly AntiAircraft , Heavy Anti Aircraft and some Grenadiers.

History of Dirnagel:

His SS membership number was 8,107, indicating he joined in 1931, still only 19. But he was not commissioned as an SS officer until 1936-- so he spent 5 years in the ranks:

SS Untersturmführer 20 April 1936
SS Obersturmführer 12 September 1937
SS Hauptsturmführer ??.??.??
SS Sturmbannführer 20 April 1943
SS Obersturmbannführer 9 November 1944

3. SS Totenkopf-Verband "Thüringen,".He then held the SS Honor Ring and Honor Sword, SA Sports Badge (no National Sports Badge) and was a Lebensborn "supporting member."

The 1 October 1944 SS Dirnagel shows him as "Commander SS Flak Replacement Regiment." Wartime lists dropped Sports Badges, and NONE of the SS Lists ever listed full awards, but what shows are his Iron Crosses 1st and 2nd Classes, the Black Wound badge visible in the photo you showed above of him as a Sturmbannführer, both classes of the War Merit Cross with Swords, and the generic emblem used to indicate ANY WW2 "Assault" Badge-- in this case the very scarce Army Flak one.

Dirnagel's EK1 document was signed by Herbert "Loch" (born 1886, alive 1958), a fellow Bavarian, General der Artillerie with eventual backdated seniority of 1.10.41, commander of XXVIII Army Corps ("acting" at the time document made out), later commander of the 18th Army, and then CO in the Eifel at the end of 1944-- a Knight's Cross winner.

Dirnagel's army Flak Badge document was signed by Fritz "Brand" (born 1889, alive 1957), who served as senior general for artillery at the Army High Command HQ 1 October 1939 to 30 September 1943.

Flames of War - Historical Scenario - Road to Smolensk - Chapter 2

Historical Scenario - Road to Smolensk - Chapter 2

This is a small beginners scenario based on a historical small battle. The original one was faught by the german 24th Inf. Division on their way from Minsk , crossing the Dnjepr to the russian city of Smolensk. Historically 24th ID captured the railway tracks as played out in Chapter 1. While pushing forward they needed to cross the 3 km wide gap to the next russian frontline. It is hot sommer and the troops need water supplies.

Troops:

German Grenadier (FV)

  • Company HQ
  • 3 Grenadier Squads
  • 3 Grenadier Squads
  • 1 StuG III (Starters Box)
  • Prelimenary Artillery Bombardment (off Table)
Russian Strelkovy (CT)
  • Company HQ
  • Strelkovy Company 3 Platoons
  • Strelkovy Company 3 Platoons
  • 2 Mortar Platoons 82-BM41
  • MG Nest

 Orders:

Germans:
After a short break it is advancing again ! Dont let the russians reassemble themselves or to take some breath. Capture the small village which is occupied by them to supply your own troops with fresh water.

Russians:
The germans are coming again, but now we are prepared and have some mortars. Let them come and we will finish them off.

Table:
You can play this scenario on a small sized table likewise 120cm by 120cm. Centerpiece is a large forest covered hill which is not passable by the StuG. On the side to one flank is covered with an MG Nest. The town itself is fortified and all russian troops are entrenched. Place three small barns or similar buildings at the far edge of the table and entrech the russian force. German Player starts with prelimenary Artillery bombardment. If you want to put some flavour to this and scenario 1 please feel free to put the railway tracks from scenario 1 into the german deployment zone.

Victory conditions:
One side always wins if the other one gets totally routed or flees from the battlefield.
Germans win when holding the town for 1 full round. Holding includes the StuG being placed there and surviving one full round despite of being surrounded of russian troops.

Victory Points:
Each destroyed or fleeing stand of russians is worth 1 victory point to the germans
Each destroyed or fleeing stand of germans is worth 3 victory points to the russians
Destroyed MG Nest is worth 2 points
Destroyed StuG is worth 2 points

Historical Outcome:
24th German Infantry Division mayor victory. The StuG was the key to success driving down all mortar units and wreaking havoc amongst the russians who were quite afraid of the tank amongst them.

Flames of War - Historical Scenario - Road to Smolensk (Beginners)

Historical Scenario - Road to Smolensk

This is a small beginners scenario based on a historical small battle. The original one was faught by the german 24th Inf. Division on their way from Minsk , crossing the Dnjepr to the russian city of Smolensk.

Troops:

German Grenadier (FV)

  • Company HQ
  • 3 Grenadier Squads
Russian Strelkovy (CT)
  • Company HQ
  • Strelkovy Company 3 Platoons

 Orders:

Germans:
You are on your way pushing the russians back to Moscow. After your mayor victory in Minsk it is now time to follow on. Your next objective is to secure your lines and build a stable front for supplies to cross the river Dnjepr. For this reason you have to press forward and capture the lone railway tracks on the road to Moscow. Seize the railway tracks and so prevent any russian counteroffensive or resupplies coming along this tracks.

Russians:
The Germans are pressing forward. After the destruction of your army at Minsk you just come from your educational bases across russia. Your job is simple. Secure the railway tracks to secure resupply of other troop parts. Stop the german advance at any cost.

Table:
You can play this scenario on a small sized table likewise 90cm by 160cm. Right in the middle is a railway track (crossing the 90cm side). Both sides place two objective markers on the railway tracks for which they must at least hold one at the end of turn 8. Deployment is on the opposite sides of the tables with 15cm deployment field to the table edge. With this scenario you can learn movement of infantry troops.

Victory conditions:
One side always wins if the other one gets totally routed or flees from the battlefield.
Game ends after turn 8 there the victory points are counted.

Victory Points:
Each destroyed or fleeing stand of russians is worth 1 victory point to the germans
Each destroyed or fleeing stand of germans is worth 3 victory points to the russians
Each objective to be hold by the side owning it is worth 1 victory point at the end of the game
Each objective to be hold by the opposing side at turn 8 is worth 2 victory points to the opposing force player for each turn it is captured by the opposing force

Historical Outcome:
24th German Infantry Division mayor victory which forced the russians to fall back another 3km and to regroup there.
