The 17. SS-Panzergrenadier-Division Götz von Berlichingen was a German SS panzergrenadier division which saw action on the Western Front during World War II.
The division was raised near Poitiers, France as the Panzer-Grenadier-Division "Götz von Berlichingen" in October 1943. It was formed from scratch, with the majority of its original cadre coming from replacement units and conscripts, many of whom were Romanian Germans and French volunteers. The division was granted the honour-title Götz von Berlichingen
After the D-Day allied invasion, the Götz von Berlichingen was ordered to Normandy to take part in the efforts to reduce the Allied beachhead. On 11 June, the division first met the enemy in combat. The reconnaissance battalion engaged in combat with the paratroopers of the U.S. 101st Airborne Division near the town of Carentan.
The Americans secured the town and were advancing south by the morning of 13 June.
SS-Panzergrenadier Regiment 37, supported by the assault guns of the division's Panzer battalion and Oberst Friedrich August Freiherr von der Heydte's 6th Fallschirmjäger Regiment, attacked the advancing paratroopers. In what the Americans dubbed The Battle of Bloody Gulch, the Germans routed two paratroop companies before their attack was stopped by the arrival of Combat Command A of the U.S. 2nd Armored Division.
For the rest of the month, the division was engaged in heavy fighting for the bocage country near Saint Lô and Coutances. During this period the Götz von Berlichingen suffered heavy losses. And started its retreat toward Germany

Flames of War - (Tutorial) - Ruins in 15mm Rural (also for sale)
Hi all,
relocating takes a while and so I found some time for a couple of short projects. One is to finally finish two wallsides which I did in plaster and then had the honor to scratch everything of detail into it.... BUT I think the work really was worth the time.
After doing a mould of the two sides I did I finally can reproduce them as often as I like... so if anyone after this tutorial is interested in getting one similar look alike ruin for his/her gaming table pls drop me a note. I guess flocked and painted with 8 Euros each is not much:
So what did I do here:
Taking measurements of course first (as you can see from the heavy mortar unit I used as a guidance.
The base is a round beermatt which I got from my local pub again.
Flock is by The Army Painter
Colours are Vallejo
So enjoy these masterpieces.
If you want to buy some for your gaming table please contact me. As a plastercasting , based, flocked and painted I would be delighted to get 8 Euros per piece (that means a full base) plus postage. Similar looking to one of these.
Enjoy !

Flames of War - Historical Scenario - Battle of Stuppach (Kampfgruppe Dirnagel vs Elements of 3rd US Army) - Historical Battle and Outcome
31st March 1945:
The west exit (road to Althausen) occupied the guns C (Caesar) and D (Dora) the south exit (road to Stuppach) A (Anton) and B (Berta) between two positions, a small height, built partly with houses of the village attracts .The morning of 31.3.45 was quiet, we schanzten they were worth, and to dig ourselves gun, as far as the terrain allowed it.Early Saturday afternoon, the American Associations broke through against Mergentheim. The first signs of panic were curses tend German soldiers, including nurses, some in army buses coming from Assam town.We expected the Americans in the southern position, but they came from the west. Between the town of Neunkirchen and BM is a hill, which was taken by the Americans by surprise. From there, the gun positions came under machine gun fire. When attempting to gain altitude again, we had the first losses.A platoon leader, it was the then 21-year Untersturmführer Walter Munch and a soldier in the battle group. It may have been about 16:30 clock, to a column of tanks and armored vehicles from 6 Althausen Coming Neunkirchen alsi approached. The guns C and D of Flakkampftrupps under Osha. Hosch took it up close and in direct fire on fire. The alert came as a flash that some gunners ran without tunic at the guns, Hosch himself had shaving cream on his face. The guns were almost uncovered in the ground in a meadow, behind a dirt road, behind a farmhouse with large barn.In the barn was one of the tractors for the guns from Munich, there was also the baggage of operations.Through targeted, rapid fire shooting C and D respectively the first and last two tanks. After a cloudy day came just at the time the evening sun through the clouds and reflected in the directional essays of the guns. The other two American tanks fired deliberately and met the two guns - at C 3 gunners were killed instantly, at the height D gunner Hans Prokorra-Ruether, 19 years old, from pan-Eickelmann, the gunner, Usha. Hanisch and Flakkampftruppführer Osha. Hosch. All the wounded gunners did manage to using rocket-propelled grenades to damage the remaining two tanks by robben zoom or destroy.Meanwhile, the guns were on the road to Stuppach under heavy fire, but were not directly attacked.Elsewhere, the battery lost the guns at the same time E (Emil) and F (Frieda), so that the total loss amounted to four 8.8 guns. In the second (10) Batt. 2 guns fell into loss - thus the combat group Dirnagel had lost half of the stock of heavy guns on the first day of use

Flames of War - Historical Scenario - Battle of Stuppach (Kampfgruppe Dirnagel vs Elements of US 3rd Army) - The Opponents
The last days of WW2 in Germany brought along many unknown "heroes" and later on mostly unknown "Kampfgruppen". These "Kampfgruppen" (Battlegroups) normally assembled from any remaining Divisions were hastily build.
Going south to the area of Bavaria there was the "Kampfgruppe Dirnagel".
This Kampfgruppe was made of mostly AntiAircraft , Heavy Anti Aircraft and some Grenadiers.
History of Dirnagel:
His SS membership number was 8,107, indicating he joined in 1931, still only 19. But he was not commissioned as an SS officer until 1936-- so he spent 5 years in the ranks:
SS Untersturmführer 20 April 1936
SS Obersturmführer 12 September 1937
SS Hauptsturmführer ??.??.??
SS Sturmbannführer 20 April 1943
SS Obersturmbannführer 9 November 1944
3. SS Totenkopf-Verband "Thüringen,".He then held the SS Honor Ring and Honor Sword, SA Sports Badge (no National Sports Badge) and was a Lebensborn "supporting member."
The 1 October 1944 SS Dirnagel shows him as "Commander SS Flak Replacement Regiment." Wartime lists dropped Sports Badges, and NONE of the SS Lists ever listed full awards, but what shows are his Iron Crosses 1st and 2nd Classes, the Black Wound badge visible in the photo you showed above of him as a Sturmbannführer, both classes of the War Merit Cross with Swords, and the generic emblem used to indicate ANY WW2 "Assault" Badge-- in this case the very scarce Army Flak one.
Dirnagel's EK1 document was signed by Herbert "Loch" (born 1886, alive 1958), a fellow Bavarian, General der Artillerie with eventual backdated seniority of 1.10.41, commander of XXVIII Army Corps ("acting" at the time document made out), later commander of the 18th Army, and then CO in the Eifel at the end of 1944-- a Knight's Cross winner.
Dirnagel's army Flak Badge document was signed by Fritz "Brand" (born 1889, alive 1957), who served as senior general for artillery at the Army High Command HQ 1 October 1939 to 30 September 1943.

Flames of War - (Tutorial) - Craters (also usable for 28mm or any other scale)
While moving house you always encounter strange things and have less time... so doing some plaster works is fine here as well as combining work (moving house) together with some eating stuff (yes invite your friends here) anddddddddddddd wargaming:
Pictures first:
Pictures first:
-Patching plaster (powdered, not ready made)
-PVA glue
-Craft Paint, Black and White
-Anything to use for texture: ballast, potting soil, dirt, etc VARIES
Step 1: Make a pie and eat it too
This is the best part of it and involves all of your family !! Make the pie and eat it. You paid for a pie crust, so make it and eat it! Save the tin!!!!
Step 2: Mix the plaster
Mix up your plaster. Generally, the stuff calls for 1 part water to 3 parts powder, but I usually have to add more water than that. Adding some glue helps thin it too, and it should dry stronger too.
Step 3: Crush up the tin to look like a crater
The pie tin needs to be molded a little to get a proper crater-like shape. Turn it upside down (or rightside up for a crater) and press the middle so that you make a depression there. How deep you want it is up to you. This will also warp the sides in a little bit, but that is ok.
Step 4: Fill it with the plaster, and make a crater
Turning it back over, fill it up to the top with plaster. Give it a few taps on the table to vibrate some of the bubbles out to ensure it bonds strong. Let it sit for at least 5-6 hours (go and help me relocate !), then CAREFULLY extract the plaster piece from the tin by bending the edges of the tin outwards away from the plaster piece. Once out of the tin, let dry for a couple more hours. (Do that chore on your "honey-do" list.)
Step 5: Paint and glue
Mix up a sticky paste consisting of PVA glue, black paint, and your texture medium. Using one of your lousy brushes (a big one), glop this stuff on the entire thing. Really build up the middle portion to make it more gradual, so the depression you made doesn't have such steep sides. Wait for this stuff to dry for several hours. On the plus side, because you added the black paint you don't need to base coat it again.
Step 6: Final drybrushing and sealing (Urban style, skip if you have different paint scheme in mind)
Take some black paint and add a glob of white to make a dark grey. Drybrush the entire outside of the crater, and the crater rim. Don't do the interior so much, but give it a light drybrush. Add more white to your grey, and drybrush again, but lighter this time. Adding a lot more white to your grey, give it a x3 very light drybrushing. On the inside of the crater, drybrush a light coat of earth-colored brown. Seal it with your preffered sealant (varnish, spray matte, modge-podge, etc).

Flames of War - (Tutorial) - Rivers the easy way
Hi all,
still not moved house and even now a bit time to do some stuff. Due to the fact that I have quite some cardboard now staying around I took the opportunity to get some for some rivers.
What is needed:
- Cardboard
- Special glue that keeps a shiny surface
- PVA Glue
- Stones/Gravel
- Sand
- Flock
- Sticki paper
- Filler
Measurements:
My river is approx 8 cm wide including the sides
Step 1:
Take two pencils and a ruler. Use some cheap tape and wrap your pencils around ruler in your desired wide (remember mine is 8 cm). Looks funny, but is a great thing to speed things up
Step 2:
Take your cardboard and simply outline your river
Step 3:
Cut your river pieces
Step 4:
Use some sticki paper to seal all open sides.
After Step 4 it should look like this ....
Step 5:
Now do the banks of the river with filler and place stones, sand etc.. in it
Step 6:
Basecoat all... I did it black
Step 7:
Paint your stuff when it is dried.. I used different brown, red and yellow for the river banks as well different blue , green and brown colours for the actual water.
Step 8:
When everything is dry and highlighted use your shiny glue on the water surface.... this will later on still reflect the light as would real water do as well.
Step 9:
Flock the river banks....
finish :)
